Mei Mei's 5th!

Happy Birthday to our sweet little Meili.  It took me a really long time to wrap my head around the fact that she was turning 5.  In my mind, she is still 3.  Maybe because we've only had her 2 years and it just doesn't seem possible that my baby could be 5.  I think I've frozen her in time in my mind.  But sure enough, when I finally came to grips with it, I realized how much she has grown and become a beautiful grown up little girl.  When you turn 5, you are a big girl....no longer a baby, but I tell her a lot that even when she's 35, she will still be my baby.....along with all the other kids.

We did a lot of celebrating for Mei's birthday.  In fact, I think it went on just about as long as we could stretch it out.  Since 5 is a big year, Meili had her first friend party.  It was so fun.  Little girls are just so sweet.   It was calm and easy going.....nothing like J.D.'s crazy boy 8-yr-old party.  I forget what a difference there is between boys and girls.

Anyway, the theme for the party was mermaids, water, and treasures.  What is it with bubbles?  Kids just can never get enough.

The girls had a great time with the pool games....

The treasure hunt was a huge success and they were thrilled with the treasure.  They became "real" mermaids as I heard one sweet little girl say.

And of course a party isn't a party without cupcakes, ice cream, and Kool-Aid...

Meili's friends spoiled her with such fun things.  She hugged every single one of them.

We knew we would be heading to Bear Lake on Meili's actual birthday so we asked Grandma Jo to join us for a little birthday dinner at Meili's favorite spot.....Pizza Pie Cafe.

We headed to Bear Lake the morning of August 1 and Grandma and Grandpa were there to meet us.  Gina and her kids came up that day too....She was pretty excited when the boys brought her out to show her a surprise.

The boys promptly took over her little golf set they gave her.

And she got a few other things that she adores which includes anything that involves coloring or drawing, clothes, Barbie movies, a new book called "Mei-li And the Wise Laoshi," and a Hello Kitty sleeping bag just her size.

The crusier bike was a huge hit...

And of course, a birthday wouldn't be a birthday without the traditional McKenna party....And Grandma Jo got Meili a very special gift.  As she was looking through some of her old college things, she came across some index cards where she had cataloged certain books.  She found one that the book was called Mei-Li.  She wondered if we could find it somewhere and sure enough we did.  It was published and became a Caldecott Award Winner in 1929.  What a treasure.  We were able to order an old library book that was in great condition.  Now Meili has two books with her namesake.

I think the kids have more fun with their newfound activity of making pyramids that almost anything!

Happy Birthday Sweet Angel!!  We are so grateful to have you as part of our family.  Your sweet fun personality and big bright beautiful smile is infectious!  Love you with all our hearts.

  1. Can't believe it took me this long to say Happy Birthday to beautiful Meili. Her birthday looks like a TON of fun and doesn't she deserve it! The Mermaid Party was so cute. She is growing up so much. What a beauty in every way.
